According to the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration, frontal airbags have already saved about 50,000 lives. These safety devices have been estimated to reduce driver and front-seat passenger fatalities by about 30 percent. Furthermore, having a lap belt, a shoulder belt and an air bag may reduce fatalities by over 50 percent. However, Takata airbags that have recently been recalled as defective might increase the chance of serious injuries and fatalities instead of decreasing it.

The Facts About the Takata Airbag Recall:

  • About 34 million vehicles were included in the recall.
  • Ten different auto makers were affected.
  • Most of the defective airbags have been traced to cars made between 2002 and 2008.
  • Some vehicles affected were made as late as 2014.

When these airbags deploy, the propellant could have deteriorated due to certain environmental conditions. Instead of merely inflating the bags as it is supposed to do, it could actually explode and rupture the bags. This can send shards of metal into the vehicle, potentially injuring or killing the car’s occupants. These defective frontal airbags could be dangerous and not a life-saving device at all.

Of course, you should get notified if your vehicle has one or more of these Takata airbags installed. However you should also check recall lists or contact your auto’s maker to find out if you should take further action if you own a car that was manufactured when these defective safety devices were installed.
